Large, off-white paws beat steadily against the earth. This wolf was burly, but swift, strong, and beneath it all, gentle. Ears were pinned against his head, though occasionally swiveled to listen to the woods around him as they steadily became brighter. Also, he payed constant attention to the young wolfess with him. Thoughts were constantly racing through his head. He repeatedly reminded himself of the words Shaloel, the ghost wolfess, had spoken at the Lake of Dreams not long before this. And then at what had just happened. Cayden perhaps had too many thoughts in his head at once.

They had come from the Dark Wood, named for the fact that light hardly reached its depths and dark creatures lurked in the shadows and were now nearing the edge of the Shining Wood, where in contrast light shone everywhere. In fact, he began to slow, the vast meadows and plains beyond the Shining Wood becoming visible through the thinning trees. He let a smile form upon his wolfish lips as warmth and sunlight were flooding the area.

He turned, a bit of a wind coming off the meadows beyond and rustling the leaves as well as rippling through his mixed fur of grays, blacks, and browns. He sat back, catching his breath a bit, though was not completely relaxed. He had a goal in mind. And he knew that they had not long. But the sun was just beginning to set and they were out of danger for now. Perhaps a bit of rest would be beneficial.. though he was not thinking of himself in this.

"So," he began in a voice which was both calm and a strange mixture of anxious, eager, uncertain, yet patiently ready. 'Okay, calm down. You've done the first part of what Shaloel said. She's saved. Now all we have to do is travel till we find the Day Warriors she was talking about.' Other thoughts about his worries of joining a new pack and all began to rise but he mentally pushed them aside. He didn't have a choice. And frankly, the ghost wolfess had gotten him rather curious about this destiny she promised him. "Camo... right?" he said finally.

'Take it slowly, Cayden. You have time. Just wait...' "Are you alright?" The question was a bit after. One thing Cayden wasn't used to, it was talking to a wolfess you can only hear in your head. It was definitely... different. He had to hide a chuckle as a mental image passed through his head of another wolf walking by, seeing him talking and then responding to no audible comments... and of course thinking him crazy.

He was so tempted to ask Camo... about Shaloel. But he was hesitant. The mysterious ghost hadn't really given him that many details... or perhaps just not the extent of what he now wished he'd gotten from her. That was for a reason, he told himself. Yet suddenly a new thought struck his mind. 'Does she talk to everyone... through thoughts? Or... is that just me?' He pondered if that was a prideful thought, but he supposed there was no harm in it. He ruffled his wings, white with gray mixtures, before speaking. "Do you mind if I ask something?"

He didn't want her to feel intruded on, and Cayden wondered if she were the type to enjoy the silence. He guessed he'd learn with time. He did hope one thing; however, and that was he was still heavily wounded and he did not want her to worry over him. Cayden was rather stubborn in his belief he could take care of himself, along with the world on his shoulders. Perhaps she wouldn't notice the remnants of Pain's attempt to crush him with his own metal...

She followed the strong wolf in front of her distractedly, her eyes fixed on the dirt, a frown hovering on her lips. Her thoughts wandered. One direction led to the lonely, bitter pup. She was worried. They had just left him there. With Shazali, no less. Her sister... She felt an ache in her heart whenever she thought of the sharp gray furred wolf. If only she had done more. Some of the spiteful things the female had said about Camo had been true, after all. That filled the mute she-wolf with painful guilt and regret.

She closed her intelligent dark green eyes for a moment, trying to clear her head. She focused on breathing for a few seconds, letting the cool, rich earthy air relax her. She could smell so many things. The faded grass dew and fall's leftover leaves. Plants soaking up the sun. The reassuring, strong scent of her wolf companion. She heard the wind rustle each dead leaf. It picked up her own long, dark brown fur and toyed with the strands.

Cayden's words interrupted her meditation, and her eyes blinked open. His voice was a tangle of mixed emotions, and she struggled to piece them together. She fleetingly wondered what question was in his mind that caused the jumble.

"Camo...right?" She heard him say.

For a brief moment she wondered how he knew her name; then she remembered her sister calling her that. She bobbed her head in a nod. Yeah. It's short for Camella. She explained.

His next question made her release a half-bitter smile. I'm fine. Then, suddenly, it occurred to her that of course Cayden was not fine. She opened her mouth in an "o" shape, although of course no sound came from it. She ducked her head shamefully at forgetting him. I'm so sorry. Of course you're still hurt.

She tasted the air more thoroughly this time, skillfully digging through each herb's scent until she found the faint smell of a plant that brought strength and quickened healing. She padded quickly until she found the source. With a quick snap of her jaws, she collected a few leaves in her mouth and delicately carried them over to the male. As she moved forward, she silently coaxed the life in the plant to give as much healing as it could. She reached Cayden and pushed the leaves forward with her tongue, carefully holding them with her teeth by the stem's tip. Camo motioned with her head for him to take them. Awkward as the action might be, she certainly didn't want to drop them and get the herbs dirty.

He spoke again, and she blinked expectantly. Of course not. She was glad he couldn't read her thoughts, because in truth she was a little nervous. Camo didn't really know how to be sociable. She was always shy, being especially awkward with others she didn't know well. However, that train of thought would only lead her to places she didn't really want to be. She truly missed her siblings, her brother especially, along with her friend Purlrii.

The mute young female tried to shake away her pondering. Whatever her feelings were, she knew she was brave enough not to cower at being pushed out of her comfort zone. Part of the journey meant fear and experiencing intimidating, new things. One question from her part-savior, part-companion was completely the least thing she had to worry about.

A glimmer of understanding came to his eyes and he nodded, "Oh. I see, well it certainly is pretty. Which do you prefer?" he asked, referring to her name. He bit his lip and nodded as she said she was fine. He was glad. At least... she was physically fine. But he didn't expect her to just tell him everything since he had run up and helped her out. He watched her and then sheepishly glanced down as she vocalized his pain.

"Yea, I'll be fine," he murmured, though watched her curiously as she ran off for a plant. 'Oh yea, she controls plants and stuff. Duh, Cayden. Don't be so dumb.'

He hesitated as she made her gestures, guessing what she was wanting, and though it was awkward he knew she was just trying to help. "Heh," briefly escaped his lips before he gently accepted the herb. If he had been human, he would've blushed, feeling her breath upon his face briefly, yet he began chewing on the herb, the motion rather strange since wolves don't usually eat plants, but even as the juices of the plant began moving down his throat he began feeling better. He was impressed.

He took in a breath, still hesitant about speaking so freely, but she had given him permission. 'Chill, Cayden, why are you freaking out so much? Sheesh!' "Well," he began, "what were you doing back there? How'd you get so deep in the woods in the first place? You could've been... seriously hurt." He watched her carefully for her reaction. Again, he didn't want to make her feel like he was stepping in on her personal bubble.

Cayden's mind was caught between listening to her, and wandering off with its own thoughts. Not that he could ever not hear her, he supposed. Her voice was so clear in his mind, and beautiful to him. 'I shouldn't ask too many questions...'

"Anyway, I'm sure your friends and family would've been really worried if something happened to you..." the words were spoken more carefully and softly. He paused, shifting on his paws a bit. "Er... are there others that can... well... hear your voice in their mind like that?" He bit his tongue, 'Yea, definitely talking too much. Maybe I seem nervous.. or awkward. Good thing she can't read minds...like Shaloel. He took in a breath, letting it out slowly, and swallowing the last bit of the herb she had given him. He knew he wouldn't feel completely better until he got some rest but he was fine for now, so he told himself.

He moved forward a bit, even further toward the edge of the woods where the trees opened up to the beauty of the plains beyond. He partly wanted to run through the grass, just because, but that probably wouldn't be smart just then. 'I wonder what she's thinking about... maybe I should tell her she can ask me anything she wants to... for the most part... maybe she really is more the silent type. Well... don't judge her. Just wait and see...'

He glanced toward Camo once again, hiding his thoughts from his face and leaned back, relaxing a bit. "Thanks for the herb," he said, realizing he hadn't thanked her before and mentally scolding himself for it a bit. "Maybe we should get some rest. We have a ways to go I'm sure... unless, you have somewhere in particular...?" he let the sentence trail off, wondering if she knew about the Day Warriors, whoever they were, or not.

Yet he didn't ask just yet. He had been speaking quite a lot, at least he felt so.

She smiled softly and dipped her head in thanks. I don't really care. I'm used to Camo but I've never minded Camella...

When he moved forward to take the herb, her eyes dropped to keep from exposing her feelings. In truth, they confused her. His closeness brought a rush of warmth and nervousness. She hoped he hadn't noticed the awkwardness, but from his half-laugh she suspected that he had. But then he took the plant and drew back, and she found herself slowly relaxing. After just a few seconds the moment was over, and yet it left her mind in a jumble.

She waited for him to speak. His questions brought indecision in her head. He wanted to know why she'd been in the Dark Wood. Camo looked at her paws. Well... It's sort of complicated. And crazy. This wolf appeared in my dreams. She told me I had to leave and join the Aaels. She said I'd have a guide to finding them. That I'd know him when I saw him. I was lost when I came to that forest, though... She didn't telepathically voice the end of that trail of thought. Yet it echoed in her head.

Then I saw you. You saved me. And I knew your name when my eyes looked into yours.

It startled her a little. That she would so instantly know another wolf. It made her shiver, but not from fear. More like the opposite of fear. She felt braver. Stronger, somehow. She lifted her head to look back up at Cayden.

He was speaking again. She tried to ignore the comment about her friends and family. She really was trying not to think about them. Instead, she focused on his new question. Did others hear her voice in their minds? It sounded almost eerie when he said it. An image of a crazed wolf screaming about the "voice" in their head flashed through her brain, but she shook it away.

Yes. She admitted. Only two others, though. My brother, Daren. And my friend, Purlrii.

She never had understood how she could talk to her brother but not any of her sisters. How Rii was the only friend she'd been able to communicate with. It didn't make sense, but it was true. She frowned. She wished she had asked Shaloel about it, but for some reason Camo doubted that the ghost would have told her the reasons for it. She probably would have said that Camella had to figure it out for herself.

She brushed the musings from her head and watched Cayden instead. So...why were you in the Dark Wood? She asked hesitantly, shyly.

The dark brown female listened as Cayden thanked her, and she only gave a short nod, as if saying it was no big deal. He suggested resting. She was worn out from the meeting with her sister, but she felt worried that if they stopped for too long Shazali would follow and catch up with them. She tried not to let anxiety flash through her eyes at the thought of what wounds Pain could inflict while they were exposed and sleeping.

She didn't know what to say. She didn't want to speak about her fears. She didn't want the male to think that she didn't trust him. His half statement, half question made her shake her head. She didn't know any good particular spot for them to rest, if that's what he meant.

"Hmm," he
contemplated at her answer, despite feeling a sudden urge to call
her Camella now, he had grown used to calling her Camo. All the
same, he supposed most others called her Camo and he wondered
if the want to be different were really his own. "Camella, then," he
murmured happily, a smile following his words. Although, the smile
faded as she began answering his question of concern... why she'd
been in the Dark Wood.

He sat back, yet perhaps he shouldn't have been surprised. 'Of
course she would have met Shaloel, otherwise half of this wouldn't
work, or make sense.'
Afterall, Cayden had been wanting to ask
about the ghost wolfess before. Camella didn't have to mention her
name for him to know who she was talking about. Who else could
appear in your dreams with instructions of your near future? He
mentally sighed, well, at least he wasn't alone in dealing with her
mysteries.

Yet then the she-wolf's thought trailed off which brought him to
focus once again and he nodded slowly, "Shaloel..." the name a
mere whisper on his lips. "She came to me, though as a ghost near
the lake west of here." He didn't add the rest just yet, for his
thoughts seemed to drift once more about the incident. Part of him
wanted to meet the ghost-wolfess once again, but then part of him
was content to not worry with her and simply carry out his
instructions. That was much simpler than trying to contemplate the
questions he had for her. His thoughts reflected Camo's. Shaloel
would probably just answer with a haunting smile and words telling
him he would learn soon enough.

"So, the Aaels, huh? That's the name of this day warrior in the East
pack, then..." It was a sort of a 'thank you Captain Obvious'
statement, moreso for Cayden's benefit to sort things in his mind.

"Well, since we're filled in, sort of, I feel much better... we both
know where we're going... Hey, whatever weird abnormalities have
brought us together to this common goal, we shall fulfill our destiny
with a sense of excitement and adventure!" He couldn't help a
playful chuckle, shaking his head slightly at himself, though his
silliness was to divert the more pressing thoughts in his head of
just what they were supposed to do once they got to these Aaels
and how the heck they were supposed to convince them to let
them join.

He was glad when his recent companion spoke of others who could
hear her... mind voice, as he called it. He supposed it wasn't like
Shaloel. Camo's was much different, maybe since it could only
heard by a select few. How fortunate he was to hear it, he thought
to himself, for it was a rather amusing thought in his mind about
what this would be like if he could not. 'It really would be difficult
to communicate for one... and, heh, how would we work out
misunderstandings or directions?'

So, there were only two others. The names meant nothing to him,
but he was glad. 'She at least has others that would care if she
were lost... or...'
he couldn't think the word dead, and yet again
he found himself having to suppress his constantly active mind. He
hadn't even been paying as much attention to Camella's small
expressions based on her thoughts or otherwise. He found her
quite interesting, which somewhat surprised him. He hadn't ever
been really fascinated with others too much, only concerned for
their well-being, particularly those he loved to help. Something
about these lands was certainly strange, he thought. He wouldn't
let the thoughts of, 'She's rather cute,' slip into his mind. Such
thoughts would only lead to mischief...

Her question caught him a bit off guard though he supposed he
should have expected it. 'I hope I can tell her a bit more about
myself sometime anyway. I am asking her a lot...'
"Well, as I
said, I met Shaloel at the lake and..." he paused, "She told me to
help a wolfess lost in the woods and in need of help. I guess she
just forgot to slip the note of the kind of help you needed." Cayden
added the last bit with a bit of amusement and yet annoyance
toward the ghost wolf. "Anyway," he continued, "she sent me off
and here I am. I hope I'm not less than you expected," he said with
a teasing grin, wagging his tail slightly. 'At least she seems to like
me well enough. If not, I guess I would know about it by now...'

Cayden settled down, beckoning for Camella join him. "I guess we
can continue later. Even if you begged me, I think I'm pretty set on
a nap." His voice was soft, more pleasant, and calm, though his
eyes still held a slight teasing glimmer. Cayden found a little too
easy to be friendly, energetic, and happy with this wolfess.
Something else that surprised him. Would me and Camella have
met at all if not for Shaloel? Or... well... Cayden its not like you're...
nevermind, just sleep and don't worry about it...'
The end to his
own thought could not be restrained in his mind. Perhaps just
protecting Camo was turning out to be more than a mission...
maybe it was silly since he had only just met her. Yet somehow...
this was different...

"Well," he murmured, laying his head down comfortably, "er... rest
easy. You're safe, and I'll protect you... no matter what... I
promise." Cayden had meant for the words to be only in his
thoughts, but he had spoken them and did not realize it until later.
Already, his mind was drifting off...

She gave a faint smile when he decided to call her Camella. She didn't feel that she needed to "say" anything further, so she didn't try to communicate with him. Instead, Camo watched her dark brown paws.

She looked up when he mentioned the ghost wolf's name. Shaloel. She nodded in affirmation. It was relieving to be reassured that she hadn't imagined the whole thing with the purple-eyed wolf. Sure, there was the jewel and everything, but it took a while for Purlrii to notice it. It was possible that Camo had made it up and gotten Rii to believe it, too.

Fortunately, it appeared that wasn't the case.

What he said next was more of a surprise to her. Day warriors in the east? When she had spoken to the ghost, she had said the evil wolves called the Veldrins were heading to TWR and were going to upset the peace. She said the Aaels, a good sort of pack, were also coming. Camo had assumed that that had meant the Aaels were going to make sure there wasn't any fighting.

But, then...why were they called warriors? She frowned slightly, confused. However, that wasn't the only part of what he had said that was news to her. So they're in the east? She asked.

The corners of her mouth twitched in amusement at his joyful outburst. Fulfill their destiny, hm? Camo wondered what that could be. So she was supposed to find this unknown pack. And once she did that, what then? It was unsettling, thinking about the future when it seemed so uncertain to her. She had left her siblings and friends to go follow some random telepathic wolf's orders. Granted, it had taken her a while for her to actually do it...but she had. Why, exactly?

Maybe Cayden's enthusiastic words were true. Maybe she was tired of hiding behind Daren. Maybe she wanted to find her own way. Maybe she wanted to see what was out there and break free from her shell. Looking over to her "rescuer", she felt a wave of relief wash over her that she wasn't alone in this. Even if she didn't know the male very well, she didn't feel as awkward around him than she would have thought she would.

She listened, interested, as Cayden recounted his side of what had happened. She was somewhat surprised that Shaloel had given him such detail in what he needed to do. The strange female seemed to Camo the type that just said something along the lines of "Go find this pack. I'll give you a guide. Just leave."

Nope. I didn't...I just expected someone to show me where to go. I really am grateful for your help. She managed another faint smile and a look into his face.

He then mentioned being set on sleeping. She looked down again. Ok... She still felt uncertain, but she tried to push away her worries. She found a spot a few feet away from Cayden and curled up, nestled against the grass and leaves. Her ears caught his words, and they made her feel a tiny warm feeling. However, she only closed her eyes, acting as though she hadn't heard. It wasn't that she was ungrateful or that his promise didn't mean anything to her.

She was just too shy to admit that it did mean something. It meant a lot.
