 Siblings' Quarrel
« Thread Started on Jan 21, 2008, 6:11pm »

Her long, slender legs were upright, her bright aqua eyes gleaming. Her head was tilted down, covering her scruffy, soft neck fur. The grass around her was wet from the almost-melted snow. Her reddish-gold paws were darkened from the muddy slush, and her coal black nose had dirt on it.

Loth wasn't one to have her head in the clouds. Despite her beauty, she had her nose in the dirt. She was concentrating on the field all around her, and she watched with hidden glee as a blade of brown grass in front of her began to grow taller. Its color began to come back, and it stretched up until it towered above her.

A smile appeared on the female's pretty face at her success. She thought she could feel the grass's happiness, and it made her glow. She was growing more cheerful every day as the plants began to regain their energy. She had never seen spring before, and she was eager to see flowers in bloom, and leaves on the trees. Rhy had described the season to her, and she was glad that the snow was melting.

Yet at that moment a rustle of grass came from behind her, and she turned around to see her brother flying at her, ready to tackle her.

A whirl of dark red and bright yellow whooshed through the air and slammed into the beautiful yet dirty young pup. Loth had the wind knocked out of her, and she lay gasping for air while her brother stood over her, laughing cruelly.

"How does that feel, Dirt-nose?" He snapped, his brown-and-green mixed eyes dancing. His sister glared at him, but he only snickered at her.

"Really, though, you're pathetic," He rolled his eyes at her, trampling the blade of grass she had just helped grow. Loth winced in pain, making him grin. "You're so weak, it's funny."

He shook her head as if he couldn't believe the lack of strength she had, but before he could taunt her more, he caught the scent of his younger brother and turned around to hear his words.

"Leave her alone, Dagorras!" He growled, jumping in to his sister's rescue. His light blue eyes were narrowed and fixed on his brother, and he moved to stand in front of Loth, whose eyes were fixed the trampled blade of grass.

"Oh, shut up, Sparky," Dagor mocked.

Nargalad's golden-brown neck fur bristled, and his ears flattened against his head. He crouched down, ready to defend the female behind him. He watched as Dagorras mimicked his position, only his brother's teeth were showing and his lips were curled back.

"Oh, look, it's little Sparky. He think he can stand up to his brother," Dagor's voice was mimicking, and Firelight frowned.

"Those scratches on your face say that I can."

He watched as his brother's eyes flashed angrily, but he still stood in front of Loth. He hated how Dagor bullied the other siblings. Usually his brother's wrath fell on Hazelthorn, but, well, that's because he was weak. And everyone knew it.

But Loth? She didn't deserve to be pushed around. And someone had to protect her.

Hazelthorn had seen his brother knock over her sister—not that he really cared. More or less, he was quite glad that Dagorras hadn’t bothered to try and play hide and seek with him. He knew that as long as Dagorras was already having his fun with some other creature, the bully wouldn’t bother to be searching under trees, bushes, or rocks for a little runt that was barely worth smacking a few times.

Of course, Hazel had occasionally wondered what Dagorras took him as; a punching bag most likely. The pup couldn’t imagine how nipping someone with your jaws was fun, but then again, he’d never done it himself.

Hazelthorn had gotten use to hiding in the branches of trees and under the leaves now. It had always been like that. Big bad Dagorras would always be bored or something—and then what could you do but run and hide?
Of course, he would never get far before Dagorras caught him… Hazel did not even want to recount those memories past that…
Since then, Hazel had decided to spend the remainder of his life living in trees. Bird droppings smelled bad, but who really cared when you could skip out on a couple bruises or so.

He wondered if the rest of them had noticed his missing self—most likely not, since the “Oh-So-Great-Hero-That-We-Shall-Bow-Down-To-One-Day-But-We-Don’t-Really-Care” Nar seemed to be attracting all of Dagor’s attention. Loth looked somewhat annoyed, even though she was just rescued—why was it that he never had a savior of sorts? And Lily… Where was Lily anyways?

To some of Pinelily’s personal shame, Lily had been watching/stalking Hazel for quite few days now. Since she had noticed Hazel’s lacking pelt along with the rest of her siblings, Lily had been curious enough to try and find where her brother had floated off to. Of course, it did take a day or so to find him at first—who would have thought Hazelthorn took a liking to squirrels? Anyhow, seeing Hazel climbing a tree for the first time did spark a little bit of envy. When he hadn’t watching, Lily managed to climb her way up a shrub or two, but she was disappointed that she wasn’t as good as her brother; perhaps it had something to do with size.

Somewhat bored of trees now, Lily approached the clearing that her sibling’s scent had marked. Though quite a common sight by now, Pinelily only sighed at the sight of her brothers’ confrontation.
“Nar!” she called, “Let it drop. Besides, Dagor, if you want to play a game, you can always try and catch my tail… that is, if you don’t fall flat in your face.”

Dagor was stronger and bigger than Nar, there was no question about that. Nar was faster, but Pinelily knew that he was to chivalric to run flat out away. Nar would lose… if they fought.
Besides, Lily could run just as fast, maybe little faster than Nar; she could easily outrun Dagor. And she had two things that Nar didn’t have: Lily wasn’t afraid to run like a chicken, and she could fit in places and shortcuts where Nar or Dagor couldn’t.

Oh well. She had said it already. Who really cared. Perhaps this was a better way than the usual brawl. At least there wouldn’t be a fight.

“So Dagor, it’s not like you to chicken out of a challenge.”

She raised her reddish gold head higher, annoyance flashing in her stunning blue-green eyes. She assumed a dignified pose, though she attempted to take advantage of her height by sitting straight up. She was annoyed at both Nargalad and Dagorras. She hated how her younger brother had to go rescue her all the time from her other younger brother.

Instead of smiling at him with gratitude, she turned away. She didn't want to get tangled up in a fight, but neither was it like her to be a peacemaker. Instead she continued to focus on the grass Dagor had trampled on.

With her mind, she willed it to grow again and stay strong. It eagerly held itself upright once more, towering above them.

But what else could she do? Grass was weak. It certainly would not impress either of her brothers. So she closed her eyes and began searching for something larger... Ah. There. A tree. She smiled.

Perfect.

His hackles rose, and he whirled to face Lily. "Want me to catch your tail, huh? I'd rip it out of your--"

But Nar had taken advantage of the distraction of his sister. He leaped to land on his brother's back, forcing him down to the ground. His teeth caught on his back, and he heard Dagor snarl beneath him. He bit down harder, and his brother began to shake back and forth, trying to lose him.

He tasted blood, but finally the larger wolf forced him to let go. He landed with a thud on the ground, but quickly jumped to his paws. His light blue eyes were flashing, matching the anger in Dagor's.

But before either of them could attack again, they felt the ground shifting beneath them, and a rumble was heard, getting louder, as if something was approaching...

Hazel nearly fell out of his perch on the wooden piece, as the rumbling from deep in the earth disrupted his already handicapped balance.

Wide eyes displayed his jealous envy as his oldest sister's power took into effect. Of course, why did she have the simplest ending to everything? With a twitch of a tail, she had stopped both of her brothers from fighting, which Lily, who somehow appeared from nowhere, had failed to do. Now imagine what miracles he could do if he had a power like that.

He didn't really care for anything else; Pinelily's taunts hadn't even surprised him, despite her peacekeeping nature. Hazel's eyes had perked for a moment when Nar had taken a bite out of Dagor--that was quite a beautiful sight to see; his tormentor being tormented.

Otherwise... Hazel had no intentions to drag himself out of his nest of smelly bird droppings and leaves when he would be perfectly safe...

The tree was shaking violently. Loth watched as a bird, shrieking, flew from it. She was surprised that it had stayed that long in the first place, with all the wolves so near. But surely any creature that had was in the tree was bound to leave, for all of the branches were swaying. The large trunk was even leaning forward.

And the rumbling through the ground continued. The female pup was beginning to grow dizzy.

Yet, finally, a large root reached the surface of the earth, and caught hold of Dagorras, wrapping itself around him, though not tight enough to seriously injure him. By then her head was swimming, and she was beginning to feel faint. Yet she let the root stop as it clutched her brother.

"You know, Dagor, you shouldn't bully your older sister when you don't know what she's capable of," She could barely get the words out, her head was throbbing so bad. It had taken a lot of effort to get the tree's root to do all that, and it had left her feeling weak.

But she managed to hold consciousness, even as she sat down and closed her eyes.

He was angry. His ears were erect, and his lips curled back into a snarl. "Real funny, Loth," He growled, his leaf colored eyes flashing furiously. His yellow and dark red fur was bristled.

But when he saw the expression on Nar's face, he really exploded. "Oh, shut up, Sparky! Once I get free of this thing I'll wipe that grin off your face!"

Nargalad was laughing. Amusement flooded through him and his "fireflies" around him danced. He couldn't believe his brother had gotten trapped by their sister who couldn't fight worth anything. "You look like a mouse caught in Dad's jaws," He snickered, making Dagor even angrier.

But when he glanced over to Loth, his amusement dimmed. "Hey, you alright?" He asked worriedly, crossing over to her. Her eyes were closed, but at his words they quickly opened to show her bright blue-green eyes.

"I'm fine," She whispered, but Nar only frowned.

Pinelily had jumped when Loth’s root had burst out of the earth, snatching onto Dagorras.

For a short moment, Lily had been relieved. It was quite wondrous how her sister could perform such feats to keep the peace. She sighed, why was it that that Nar must be so chivalrous? How hard she had tried to keep her feuding siblings together. Only this time, she had broken the peace, instead of kept it. Could she do anything right?

As Nar’s attention flew to ailing Loth, Lily’s flew to Dagorras. Maybe he was a bully, but something did not look particularly right…

“Dagor!” Lily cried, suddenly with concern, noticing the wound on his back, “You’re bleeding!”

“We should get Dad!” she cried to the rest of them, concerned for Dagorras’s wound. None of them had gotten a real blood wound before.

Hazelthorn dug his claws into the back in alarm as his tree shook violently. With a few desperate flails with his paws, he managed wrap his front paws onto a sturdy offshoot, saving himself from a fall. Hazel hung there, panting for a moment, relieved he somehow managed to survive the throbbing earthquake.

Suddenly, there was a crack. With a yelp, Hazel fell.

There was a thump as Hazelthorn’s bottom hit the ground, a flutter of detached leaves and twigs following. Well… So much to the secret hiding place staying secret…

She noticed Nar's gaze still on her, and the frown he held on his face. "I'm fine," She repeated, tilting her head higher, defiance flashing in her eyes. She didn't want him worrying about her all the time, or acting like her personal shield... She could take care of herself.

But then Loth heard a yelp, and turned around to see Hazelthorn fall out of the tree. She blinked at first, wondering how he could have possibly gotten into the tree in the first place. It wasn't natural. Wolves didn't climb trees.

Pinelily's concern irritated him, and he glared at her with his leaf colored eyes. "It's nothing," He snapped. "Sparky couldn't give me a real wound if he tried."

It was, in fact, paining him, but Dagorras wasn't about to admit that his brother got the best of him in a fight. He could already imagine the mocking glimmer in Nargalad's eyes without even turning to look at him. The bully, the strongest, was wrapped up in his sister's roots with a wound from his brother on his back.

He glared at Pinelily, suddenly blaming her for what had happened. "It's your fault," He snarled. "If you hadn't distracted me, Sparky wouldn't have been able to bite me in the first place."

But then he watched as Hazelthorn fell out of the tree, and he laughed sadistically into the air. "What kind of wolf climbs in trees?" He said aloud, a dangerous glint in his eyes.

He paused for a moment, before saying, "What? You don't know? A freak does. A wolf who's to weak to stand up to their younger brother. A coward. An outcast. A freak."

He didn't believe Caran-Glorloth, but he knew that it was best if he let her be. She was stubborn, Nar knew, refusing to admit her weakness. Like him, he supposed. Refusing to admit defeat. He wondered if they would be closer if their own egos didn't clash.

But he glanced over to Dagor. His brother was complaining, saying that Nar couldn't really wound him, and that it was Pinelily's fault. Firelight frowned, glaring at his brother. But before he could say something back, their other brother tumbled out of a tree.

He felt surprised, and a little confused. What wolf climbed trees? But he said nothing, even as Dagorras began to insult Hazelthorn about how weird Hazel was. Nargalad didn't stick up for their brother, though perhaps he should have.

But that was the thing about Hazelthorn. He never stuck up for himself.

Yet even as those thoughts ran through his mind, a scent filled his nostrils. It was faint, but nearing by the second. And the smell was that of his father.

Hazelthorn’s lip quivered at Dagor’s insult. If only he had the power to… rip his sibling’s fur out… so there would be none left… and they could all laugh at him…
Silently, he wished that some great being from above would grant him more power than any of his siblings—what would they say then? What would Dagor do then? Imagine… returning the torment he had endured for all that time…

Hazel did not speak. He knew better. Words did not hurt. If he had retaliated, Hazel would have earned himself a number of painful bruises the moment Dagor got out of his temporary prison. Some others may have taken the rare moment to start swinging away with thousands of insults, but Hazel was not of that type.

But he knew one day… When he was stronger… He would get Dagorras back… Hazel was beginning to feel that day in his darkening heart.

“Well, it’s your fault for trying to be better than everyone else! If you weren’t bullying Loth… You wouldn’t have gotten into a fight in the first place!” she shot back at Dagorras, solely annoyed at the fact Dagor never appreciated anything.

Her nose twitched, her father’s scent approaching.

“Dad!” she squealed, and tried to jump on her father’s shoulders, almost overjoyed that he was back. “They were fighting again,” she pouted, “and Dagor is stuck on a root bleeding and Loth looks like she’s going to fall over—she grew a tree!”

Blue-green eyes were narrowed against the wind as he ran. Golden-brown paws thudded against the ground in a blur. A black-tipped tail streamed out behind him like a furry banner. His breath was quick as he inhaled the early spring air with his nostrils. His ears were pinned behind his head because of his running motion.

Rhyelan slowed as he neared his pups, and his eyes lit up when he saw them, knowing them as his pride and joy. They were his reason to live. Without them he didn't know where he would be. After Leaf had died... The only thing that kept him from giving up on caring about anything, just drowning in sorrow, were his own offspring.

He heard his daughter's voice, a squeal of gladness, and he wagged his tail as she jumped on his shoulders. "Pinelily," He smiled, his bushy tail swishing back and forth. But then she spoke, and his smile faded.

"Nar, Dagor..." He said sternly, turning to look at them. But he instantly instead that roots were wound around his son's body, and before he could ask for an explanation...tragedy struck.

After it happened she blamed it on herself. If only she hadn't been weak, if only she had been stronger...then she could have prevented it. But instead she blinked in confusion at a spot growing closer in the distance at an alarming rate. The scent confused her, and the creature that came into view was airborne.

Her heart began to beat faster and faster as she saw it. Loth could sense danger and she felt frightened. "Dad..." She whispered, terrified. But Rhy didn't have time to do anything, and he was angry with himself after it was over.

The large bird's claws were extending, and just as Rhyelan snarled and tried to grab Nar, the bird caught hold of the pup and carried him into the air.

Loth's stomach lurched. She stared in disbelief as the creature flew away with her brother in its claws. She noticed that someone was crying out in barks and howls, and didn't realize that it was her. She heard Rhy cry out Nargalad's name, and she felt the shock soaking in.

Nar was gone.

Dagor's eyes were wide as he watched the scene unfold before him. "Should have seen it coming," He muttered after the bird was out of sight. "Someone should have done something."

His eyes flashed cruelly. "If I had been taken, that bird never would have gotten away with me."

Loth turned on him then, light blue eyes blazing in anger. "Maybe you should have been taken!" She cried, before she started running away, tears blurring her vision. Dagor watched her go, and called after her. "Hey, aren't you going to free me?"

But she just kept running.

“Quick! Rhy! Follow the bird! If we can keep it in sight, there might still be some hope for Nar!” Laia spun into the clearing, masses of dirt spraying into the air.

Laia had seen enough from afar to know what event had occurred. She looked older now; more mature, as though years had been poured into her eyes in a few moons. A certain authority was present now, much more confidence than the child that had broken down crying when her loved did not love her back.

But not enough. Stress had recently struck the parents of this family. There were not enough wolves to take care of these pups. Doubt was cornering it the depths of their minds.

“Go! Now! You run faster than me!” she cried, and turned “Lily, Hazel, stay close. There could be more…”

It had been her fault. Of course it had… They should have never left the pups out their sight. It was always wrong. It had been wrong since Leaf had left them… and Rhy… He had never been the same.
Laia blinked. Where was Loth? First Nar? Now Loth?

Distressed, the she-wolf stared at the pup’s trail into the wood. It was out of the question to leave the pups unprotected. Desperately, she pleaded in her mind that the female would be safe.

…in the name of your promise, Leaf… We’re not going to lose your pups now…

Lily’s eyes blinked in frozen shock as the bird snatched away Nar.
Why… How… She was stunned.

The sound of tearing wood shook Lily out of her paralyzed state. Laia had torn the root into shreds with her powerful jaws, catching Dagor as he fell.

“We’re lucky the root was still green… Back to the den… It isn’t safe here anymore…” the she-wolf said, pausing. “Nar and Loth should be all right… Your father will save them”

Concern reflected in Lily’s eyes. “I hope Dad does…”

He hadn't noticed Laia's scent, but he noticed her as she came into view. Her words caused him to snap out of his state of shock, and he quickly began to run, his paws moving on their own accord. "I'll meet you back home!" He called as he left.

Nargalad... He was so angry with himself. He should have done something! Anything! He could have created an illusion to stop the bird or attacked it at the least... How could he have let Nar get taken?

Even as Rhy ran, he angrily cried out at himself, "Stupid! Look what you've done??" But he quieted down, and focused on the spot that was growing smaller every moment. He was running as fast as he could...but it was no use. He couldn't outrun an eagle. And he couldn't create an illusion that far away.

But he would just keep going. He could run for long distances, and maybe, somehow, he would get to the eagle's nest... He hadn't worried about what would happen when he got there. He knew it was dangerous to face up against the bird predator, but that didn't matter to him then. His son was in danger.

Rhyelan continued to run, seemingly endlessly. The eagle had disappeared from view, but he kept going.

A while later he reached a thick grove of trees. He was inhaling with his nose, and it took him a few seconds to pick up the scent of the eagle. But he followed it. As he walked the ground was getting steeper and steeper. Rocks jutted out from the ground, the trees were getting thinner. Where was he? But he kept going.

He climbed over the rocks, and as he did so the smell was getting stronger. Just as he was about to reach the top of the small mountain, a loud screech filled the air and the eagle came swooping down to meet him. Rhy was caught slightly off-guard, but he was able to react. Quickly he threw up the illusion of a wide lake, with fish jumping below.

The eagle swerved in confusion, but caught sight of the fish and swooped downward. Relieved, Rhy climbed up to the top of the mountain. The nest was large, and a few baby chicks were inside of it. But what else was there...Rhyelan dreaded to see.

Scraps of golden-brown fur. A torn piece of Nar's ear. Blood. The scent of his pup over the whole nest. Tears blurred the Alpha's vision. "Nar..." He whispered.

Caran hadn't run far. She was snuffling, so shocked and upset. How could it have happened? It had gone by so fast...none of them had time to react... Could Nar really be gone? What could they possibly do?

She shuddered at the thoughts, her breath coming in painful gasps. Tears trickled down from Loth's blue-green eyes like salty rain drops against red-gold sand. The grass around her was leaning toward her, drooping down sadly. Usually she would scold the plants, and tell them to be happy, but then she couldn't even be glad herself.

She was more sensitive than she let on. She was less confident than she appeared. And what about her brother? How could he survive being carried off by that thing? She was so afraid... She couldn't stand being alone longer. So, trembling, and tears still staining her cheeks, she slowly began to walk back toward the others.

"Ouch!" He complained as Laia caught him. "Couldn't you be more...gentle?!" His tone was annoyed; ungrateful. He felt angry for some reason, even more than usual. "Besides!" He snapped. "I could have just freed myself!"

Even as the others spoke, even as Rhyelan ran off, chasing the bird, Dagor shook his head. "Are you kidding? Did you see how fast that thing was? There's no way Dad can catch up! I don't even see why he's trying..."

His leaf colored eyes were filled with spite. One might look at him and wonder if he really had no heart at all. And did he? Did he care even a bit about his own brother? Perhaps so...but if he did, Dagor sure wasn't going to admit it.

But he turned to see Loth appear again, her eyes red, her cheeks wet. "Look who's been crying..." He muttered mockingly, but his sister didn't even glance at him.

Laia was furious. Dagor—couldn’t he see this was not the time? Laia would refuse to believe Rhy was anything but capable of finding Nar. She would not let anything get in between her belief that Nar would be safe. She couldn’t let this happen again—not again.

“Don’t ever say your father can’t do what he goes to do.” she growled lowly, “He will find Nar… He will...”

Laia eyes narrowed. It had been her fault; thinking the pups could handle themselves. Laia sighed. Finding food had been a struggle this year, with so few in the pack, though the pups never seemed to notice how hard they struggled to bring prey to their mouths. There had never been anyone left to spare to watch the pups.

Lily watched silently as Dagor complained. Only Dagor would not feel grim for Nar’s disappearance, she thought bitterly. Her thoughts wandered to just moments before, when Dagor had watched Nar spitefully, as though he hated him with all his heart. She wondered what Dagor was thinking, but then immediately corrected herself. She didn’t want to know what thoughts went through her brother’s head.

Lily looked up as Loth appeared out of the undergrowth. So she was back now… but Nar was still missing. Loth’s eyes had been red from crying. Lily heard whimpers and someone still crying softly—even Hazel must had been stunned to that degree! But as she turned to Hazelthorn, he was as silent as stone. That confused her, until she tasted salt on her own cheeks.

It was she who was crying, not Hazel at all.

Hazel had been unmoved. He watched dimly, with little interest as Loth and Lily had stained their cheeks with floods of tears. Even Dagor had felt an anger of a certain sort. But Hazel was unmoved. He was silent, yet he felt nothing. He cared nothing for his brother who had been taken away. What had Nar done for him anyway?

As Laia gathered them all together, Hazel slipped away. Months of practice had been more than enough to disappear unnoticed. It wouldn’t be until the rest of the got back home until someone was to notice he was gone too. By then, Hazel would be long gone.

It was his perfect chance. He, not anyone else, would rescue Nar. Then, they would all look up to him, and praise him as their hero; even Dagor. No one was to rescue Nar but him—Hazelthorn would make sure of that.

((Gaspish... Hazel is... leGASPeth... nevil...))
